3 Tips For Small Perth Bathroom Renovations

February 21, 2017

Many older bathrooms are small by design, especially in certain Perth WA suburbs. They were built during a time when bathrooms were thought of as practical spaces, not spaces designed for relaxation. Today the bathrooms we build have both in mind. People want a beautiful space but want that space to feed their busy needs. Generally, the smaller bathrooms in Perth are the ensuites and this is just of years of doing bathroom renovations in this city. The irony of this is that usually the ensuite will be used by two people at the same time so we always wish it was bigger! Hide the negatives and accentuate the positives is key. So most likely the issue with your bathroom is that you are trying to create space or the feeling of space. The big advice I can give for that is to reduce the number of walls in the room, now when I say walls I mean actual walls such as this Inglewood bathroom renovation below and shower screen walls like this southern river bathroom renovation below. By moving what feels like a corridor in the entrance of the room to away from the door towards the window it will make the room feel huge.

Tiling Is King - Full Height Tiling

Wall space is something even the smallest bathroom has so when you can tile it. Using large gloss tiles will make a room feel so much bigger with the light bouncing around the room. When you tile to the ceiling you can also draw people into a feature wall like the bathroom below in canning vale. This 2.5m x 1700mm family bathroom used the feature wall technique to draw you to the height of the bathroom opposed to the floor space it has. The other is a tiled full height toilet which is a simple representation of a small space with high tiling and feature tile.

Keep It Off The Floor

A vanity that connects only to the wall makes a bathroom instantly appear larger. This is due to the clean lines and feeling of flow. It also a great technique for having a patterned vanity that does not interfere with your floor choice.  Wall hung or floating vanities as they are called do require a bit more plumbing as you need to recess the pipe into the wall so take that in mind when working out a costing.

 Let There Be Light

Quite a lot of the older bathrooms will have frosted window or that have wires running through it. Adding a larger new window or a skylight will be a great first step towards making even the smallest bathroom feel much larger. The key is you want as much natural light into the room as possible.

If you install a window higher on the wall, you can install clear glass without losing your sense of privacy. This will allow you to see the great outdoors and your bathroom will feel much larger.

Below are two bathroom renovations in Joondana and Scarborough that have no window but a skylight.

Natural light is the key to make any room seem larger. Tile selection and layout of the room can play a part but still, you want if possible to get light into the room either through a window or a skylight it will go a long way to making that big difference. I find the darkest rooms feel the most cramped below is a bathroom renovation we complete in canning vale its again a classic family small bathroom but regardless of the moving of the screen the use of matt wall tiles and almost no natural light makes the room feel smaller than it needed to. Below is the same tile with different levels of natural light.

Small bathroom renovations in Perth are becoming our speciality but regardless of where your small bathroom is its important hat if you take away anything from this page is the need of lighting in a bathroom. Natural lighting is one of the most if not the most important part of making a small bathroom feel much bigger.
