Why I Love A Feature Wall - Feature Advice

November 4, 2017

For some, the feature wall is hopelessly out-of-date, that though is not my opinion. Its a great way to make a statement or provide a much needed flair to a bathroom renovation. We recently finished a bathroom renovation in Mount Lawley, Perth which i have featured below and i honestly think its the future of playing it safe in bathrooms. For quite a while the strip (mosaic or listello running vertical or around a bathroom) was the go to feature but often it looked small and out of place. Done right the mosaic though can really break up wall space and add pop so lets do the pros and cons as we always do.

PROS

  • A bathroom feature wall can help bring everything together if done right. Matching the vanity top or external floor

  • Feature walls are great for small spaces. Tiling one wall in a striking colour can add the illusion of depth where there isn't much. This is especially true of bold, dark colours.

  • If your bathroom has awkward spaces that just in and out a feature wall can distract from these obscurities

  • Continuing the floor up the wall as the feature creates an illusion of height in a room.

  • Done in a large format tile is easier to keep clean then if a strip of small mosaics

CONS

  • They can be distracting. Done incorrectly (ie in the wrong colour, with the wrong vanity or on the wrong wall), feature walls can look out of place and confusing.

  • The colour can date. Colours, like furniture and fixtures, are cyclical - so you may find that, a few years after painting your entryway turquoise, it no longer looks fresh and fun, but dated and daggy.

  •  If your room is already crowded and busy, a feature wall will only add to the chaos.

What i love is not something everyone will love. Most of us have painted a feature wall in there house and changed it after waking up and not loving that red any more. The issue with bathrooms is once its in its in so you have to be extremely confident. One of the ways you can counter act this is pick a nice light floor to run up the wall or something ties in to other permanent aspects of the house. The key to feature walls we do in our Perth bathroom renovations is pick the wall that's the best focal point. If its done where you cant see it straight away it feels a little pointless. So there you have it look at the pictures read the advice and decide for yourself do you think you will love it 5 years from now.

PS. This is a glass feature wall we did in a bathroom renovation In Thornlie. I would like to know in the comments do you like it or not.
