2019 is the year for extreme choices when it comes to bathroom tiling. As you will see from the list below its either the trend of no pattern or all the pattern you can find. There is nothing wrong with an extreme pattern, it just makes it hard to make decisions for everyday renovators as they are spending their hard-earned money on the bathroom they need to want now. So below we will focus on bathroom tiling trends that Australia will be booming within 2019 and beyond and hopefully help in the decision process.
The most popular style of new tiles going into 2019 bathrooms are en-caustic, leaf, marble, fish scale, concrete, and terrazzo coming up the rear slowly. Many of our upcoming 2019 bathroom renovations have picked one or a combination of these tiles. Perth is experiencing a boom in the bathroom tile choices and will use our renovated bathrooms below as examples where possible to help in the visualising process.
En-caustic or Pattern Tiles
Encaustic tiles have been around for centuries. They come in and out of fashion and at the moment they are big in fashion. This last year alone we completed around 5 times more of this style than ever and one of the biggest reasons for this in Perth anyways is with all these tiles they are just more accessible and more affordable than ever before. It is like the trends of coloured tapware such as black or gold they have become more affordable and in stock so we tend to do more.
Black and white like this design below is the most popular by far as everyone still loves black and white. It feels the most regal and feels fresh in some ways.
Coloured patterns can be amazing done in the right setting this royal blue/grey bathroom we completed below is complemented well with the subway tiling.
The Leaf
I call it the leaf tile due to the unique finish of waves that intertwine creating a natural but modern vibe to your bathroom. 2019 is about organic and natural feels in the bathrooms, with plants being a bigger trend in the bathroom, so the leaf tile is an extension of that natural feel.
Marble Look Tiles
Marble is expensive marble look tiles not so much. Our biggest trend for wall tiles are marble look tiles over in a gloss opposed to a matt. A nice white marble white tile can make a room feel big without overwhelming in other tiles that are darker or have millions of lines. Again as mention above the marble leans towards natural where just a purely gloss white tile feels cold in comparison.
Terrazo Tiles
So this is not something we do very often but judging by all the inquiries it is something that is quite popular everywhere else. Below is a quick definition of what it is if you didn’t know.
Made by mixing marble, granite, quartz, or glass chips into a cement binder, terrazzo is attractive and one of the toughest products available. As we move into 2019 and 2020 this will be hugely popular.
Concrete Looking Tiles
So this is where the minimalist bathroom trend comes in. That industrial, non-clutter and clean lines look I personally feel are here to stay for a long time. We often renovate bathrooms that are poorly designed from the 80 and ’90s full of colour or ugly browns/yellows tones that homeowners are desperate to move away from. This means darker flooring and basic wall tones are the upward trends. Often to create some warmth a marble feature wall might be added but most often it will either be floor to ceiling in one colour or a gloss white large format tile.
Moroccan Fish Scale
They have been called mermaid tile, scallop tile, wave tile, sea tile, fish tile and a slew of others but most popularly called the Moroccan fish scale. People frigging love these tiles as they have a calming influence to them taken from the feeling of the ocean when you look at them. Particularly popular in showers and bathrooms, these Moroccan fish scales are just as beautiful but damn expensive! so be cautious.
This Atwell bathroom renovation we completed combines so many great elements to make it work.
In 2018 going into 2019 we are bombarded with exciting new images and products daily and we are more fickle than ever in our tastes with tiling trends in 2019 no different. Renovation shows can be great and a curse for everyday people renovating as they are not always practical in the layouts and styles they pick. That is why we often have always advocated for classic simplicity in fixed elements like tile. This way you are flexible about what you can add and take out from the external fixtures like rugs, plants, towel and paintings in the bathroom.
Probably the most important rule to always remember is that there are no rules for renovating. Whether you elect for complementary or clashing wall and floor tiles, the choice is yours. If there is one overall arching trend it is this, happy living spaces are what everyone is trying to archive. Whether that is making the bathroom clutter-free, warm, high tech or full of wow we are trying to make our bathrooms a happy place so the only person who can tell you whats makes that space your own is you.
