When tiling a herringbone pattern, the standard rule of thumb is that each rectangular tile is laid at 90 degrees to the tile next to it, creating what the experts refer to as a “fishbone” pattern that also resembles a set of arrows or triangles.

This is completely up to your personal taste and the design that you are after. It really depends on if you are making a feature or if your tile has a pattern.
