4 Key Laundry Renovation Items
February 16, 2021

The laundry is one of the most overused yet underrated rooms in any home. There’s no one-size-fits-all design that suits every family’s needs, which is why getting the layout and functionality right is so important.

Below, we’ll cover the four key parts of every laundry renovation we complete in Perth, WA, and share some insights to help you make the most of your space.

Whether you’re renovating your existing laundry or building a new one, these tips will help you get the best results and create a laundry that’s both practical and enjoyable to use.

Do I Go Front or Top

You can’t have a laundry without a washing machine — unless you’re Amish, in which case, my sincerest apologies.

One of the first decisions you’ll face in your laundry renovation is whether to go with a front loader or a top loader washing machine. Chances are, you already have a personal favourite, but it’s worth considering how each type fits into your layout.

Front loaders are ideal for tighter spaces, as they can be stacked with a dryer or tucked neatly under a benchtop. They also have a more efficient spin cycle, meaning shorter drying times and better energy efficiency compared to their top-loading counterparts.

In comparison, top loaders have much shorter wash cycles, let you toss in that stray pair of socks after the wash has already started, and tend to vibrate less than front-loaders. They’re also easier on your back since you don’t have to bend down to load and unload them.

Many top loaders use less detergent, are simpler to maintain, and don’t develop that musty door-seal smell that front-loaders can get. The biggest advantage, though, is capacity — they generally fit a lot more, making them ideal for large families or anyone who does heavy washing loads.

If you’re aiming for a clean, bench-heavy laundry renovation, a front loader is the way to go. But if you prefer a top loader, the trick is to position the washing machine at the end of your layout — this helps you make the most of your space. Below are some great examples of both styles in action.

Sinks

It generally comes down to two main types of sinks. First, you have the drop-in sinks, which can be either ceramic or stainless steel.

or the under-mounted sink for a little class.

The main difference I’ve noticed over the years is that clients tend to prefer ceramic sinks for a touch of class and a more natural, solid feel. One comment that’s always stuck with me was a client’s complete dislike of the noise stainless steel sinks make compared to ceramic — it drove them mad! Like all parts of a renovation, though, it really comes down to what works best for you and your space.

Cabinets

The cabinet finish is always a big question to ask yourself, but the reality is pretty simple. Most people choose a white laundry finish — either because it’s more affordable or just an easier decision to make.

The majority of bathrooms we renovate are white, and for the same reason, most laundries end up that way too. White makes it easier to visualise the space, which helps simplify what can be a stressful selection process. It also looks clean, timeless, and goes with almost anything. That flexibility means you can really make your splashback stand out without the overall space feeling too busy or overpowering.

Woodgrain laundry cupboards can look absolutely stunning. The key, in my opinion, is going for a two-tone setup. Mixing finishes creates contrast and helps the space feel more dynamic and visually balanced, rather than flat or heavy.

Benchtop

We all need bench space — and in a laundry, you can almost never have too much of it. It’s where we fold, sort, and organise, so having enough room makes a huge difference. The type of benchtop you choose will often depend on your washing machine setup.

When it comes to sinks, an integrated sink is the gold standard for laundries, though it does come at a higher cost. A good-quality drop-in sink, however, works just as well and still looks great. For benchtop materials, treated wood or silica free stone are both excellent options. The main thing to remember is to choose a non-porous surface, since the laundry tends to be the area where we use the most chemicals and cleaning products.
